2022 was the year I started seriously thinking about house music. At the centre of that was the fabulous, ethereal, mesmerising DJ Honey Dijon. As a black trans woman, Dijon places the queer utopianism that gave birth to house music at the centre of her craft, weaving stories of queer empowerment and beauty through her intoxicatingly and wetly chthonic production. She has been working steadfastly in the queer house scene in Chicago and New York since the 1990s, encompassing the glitz of disco and the dirty edges of techno, but only recently did she break into the mainstream. Honey Dijon inspires me every day as a symbol of queer authenticity carving a space for herself within an increasingly appropriated musical world, and reminds me always to stay true to my own craft. I would highly recommend her 2022 album Black Girl Magic – it’s just like Beyonce’s Renaissance if it were made by a gay person.
